Hi all,
Just a few announcements.

Parents, PLEASE, do not park in front of the gate when you pick your rower up from practice at the marina.  Please drive PAST the gate and park along the street so that you are neither causing congestion off the main road nor blocking the gate.

Regarding Stotesbury, Rowers will be going straight from the bus to the race sight on Thursday and will be rowing.  You will not have access to your suitcase so dress ready for practice when you come Thursday morning.  You must have your uni and JL to row on Friday so remember to pack it.

End of year picnic will be June 12 per the coaches request.  More informtion will follow.

UPCOMING EVENTS
May 14 - leave for Stotesbury
May 18 - MV Crew Booster Meeting, 7:30 in E106 (we will be taking orders for gift cards and voting on next year board members)
May 22 - Regatta at Occoquan (including the finish to the champianship races that got cancelled this past Sat.)

4/12/2010

Hi everyone,

First I have to say that this past weeks regatta was a great time.  I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.  The rowers all did a great job rowing multiple races.  A BIG THANKS to Mary Pryor for organizing the picnic and for the use of the grill.  Thanks also to Dottie Dilts/Ted Rabusseau for their grill and cooking, John Boyce and dad for grilling (and any other grillers) and for everyone who contributed food/drinks/paper goods and for your help.

Next, in case you have not heard, our shells were involved in an accident on the way back to the marina.  Coach Paul and Robin Jones were both ok.  Three of the shells had some damage.  We will be working quickly to either purchase a shell or lease a few shells in order for the team to practice this week and to continue with a competitive season.

Given this recent event, FUTURE FUNDRAISERS will be important so please try to support them.  We will be taking orders for gift cards (flier attached) at the next booster meeting (free money).  Please consider asking your neighbors if they would be able to support crew by purchasing a gift card to a place where they already shop.  Consider buying a few yourself. They will be here near the end of the month.  Call or email Paula Weinberg if you have any questions at psakmom@cox.net

Thank you to those who signed up to donate items to the George Mason Regatta concessions stand (a fundraiser).  If you are planning to attend the booster meeting on the 20th and your item is nonperishable, please bring it to the meeting if you are able.  We still need people to sign up for a few items.  I have sent a separate email with the list to those who hadn't had a chance to sign up.

This Friday's team dinner will be hosted by the Whipple, Doss and Carlow-Jones family.  It will be held at the George Washington Community Center which is located on base. Take Walker Gate entrance close to the Marina.   It is at 5714 Surveyor Road, Ft. Belvoir. Start time is 6:00.  Parents, please pick your rower no later than 8:45 so that you will be able to exit through Walker Gate.  Rowers, get a good night sleep, Saturday morning will be an early one.

Saturday's regatta will the James River Regatta be in Richmond.  Those interested in traveling down the night before may want to look into staying at the Hampton Inn, Comfort Inn or Days Inn.  I have heard that these are all close and decent hotels.  IF ANYONE HAS AN ISSUE WITH TRANSPORTATION PLEASE LET THE TEAM CAPTAINS OR MYSELF KNOW ASAP.  I will be leaving town Wednesday so you will need to let me know before then.  Directions:

110 mi – about 2 hours 2 mins

Short version of directions: * From the North take I-95 S

* Exit at 84B (295/64W to Charlottesville)

* Take Exit 288 S (Chesterfield) and follow that

* Exit at Huguenot Trail/Robious Road E (Rt. 711), turning left at light

* Go approximately 2 miles

* Turn left at the first stop light onto James River Road.

3/14/2010

Hi everyone,

First a thank you to everybody who showed up this past Saturday to help make the necessary repairs at the marina.  We are now in pretty good shape for this year's season with the work 98% completed.

A few reminders:

1. Gift card orders can be turned in to Paula Weinberg by Tuesday March 16.  You can email her at psakmom@cox.net or call her at 703-360-4029.

2. Attendance is taken at every practice. Rowers are responsible for letting either your team captain or Mrs. Jones know if you will not be at practice.  Attendance is important and used to determine who rows at regattas and will impact your ability to go to Stotesbury in May.

3. Practice will be held at Fort Belvoir all this week.  Practice will generally be over @ 6:00 but some days may be shorter and some days may be longer, especially now that it is day light savings and we have a little more time of daylight.

4. Please dress for the weather, we do sometime row in the rain. IF YOU BORROWED A JACKET FROM MRS. JONES AT FRIDAY'S PRACTICE, PLEASE RETURN IT MONDAY AT PRACTICE.

5.  Outstanding clothing orders - unis and raincoats should be here by spring break or sooner. We are hoping that the final order of sweatpants/shirts etc will be here sometime this coming week.

6.  Spring Break - there will be practice over the spring break, we will let you know the schedule once it has been determined.  If you are not going to be here over spring break you need to let the coaches or Mrs. Jones know now.

7.  Crew jobs have started.  From now until mid May our team is required to provide workers to fill these jobs which are generally on Saturdays.  We will be fined $50 for every job we do not fill.  Please email or call our Volunteer Coordinator to sign up for one of these jobs.  Contact information if Susanne Bolton at ascbolton@cox.net or 703-799-0662.  Also, we still need a Food Coordinator for the George Mason Regatta on May 3.  This is one of our important fundraiser.  Please let myself or Susanne know if this is something you are willing to do.

8.  BOARD POSITIONS- MV Crew board is made up of the following positions:  President, Vice President, treasurer, secretary, volunteer coordinator, OLOC, VASRA rep. fundraiser coordinator, and web master.  If you are interested in any of these positions for next year please let our Nominations Committee (Mary Pryor at mary.pryor@fcps.edu or Susanne Bolton at ascbolton@cox.net ) or myself know.  Currently we have openings for 6 of these positions.

9.  Remember to check our website www.mvcrew.com for updated information including regatta schedules, team dinners etc.
STOTESBURY This is our annual trip to Philadelphia May 14-15 to row in the Stotebury Regatta.  It is optional but we will need to know if you are planning on going in order to plan the exact cost/person and to figure our boats.  Last year the cost was @ $195, again the price this year will be dependant on the number of rowers going.  All expenses will need to be paid before you will be allowed to get on the bus.  We will also need a few chaperones so if you are interested please let myself or Sue Davis know.  Also, there are several rooms reserved at the Comfort Inn Philadelphia Airport Hotel which is where the team will be staying.  If you are interested in booking one of these rooms the cost is $82/room.  Mention that you are reserving a room from the MVHS parents block of reserved rooms.  Sue Davis's contact information is edavisrad@msn.com

Thanks and as always, if you have any question give me a call.

2/12/2010

Hi everyone,
Hope you all were able to enjoy the snow.  As you all probably guessed we have had to change some deadlines and scheduled events, so here are the new dates along with with new events (in blue).

February 16 - Booster meeting, 7:30 G-106.  Meetings last @ an hour, please try to make this meeting.  We will be taking gift card orders and talking about the latest proposal from VASRA which is to increase our cost per rower by $22 which, if passes in March, will need to be paid by the end of the season.  This basically translates to $1320.  So, please, come out and be part of the discussion and help to raise funds by placing a gift card order. I will send the agenda out by Monday evening at the latest.

UNIS, SPIRIT CLOTHING (Optional),PAYMENTS AND PAPERWORK DEADLINES- EVERYTHING IS DUE BY FEBRUARY 20. THZ IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING.  It very important that everything be done this week so that we will be able to have base access and so that we will be able to have our unis in time for the first regatta.  And although you have until Feb. 20 which is tag day I encourage you to take care of this before then, especially the uni information.

If you have not yet provided your measurements for your uni, you will need to submit your height, weight and your chest (fullest part) and waist measurements.  The cost of the uni is $56 and the JL (you can use last year's JL) is $30.  The rainjacket (optional) is $110.

Also, if you have not yet taken the swim test or watched the safety video, talk to Mrs. Jones at the first practice when we get back to school.

February 20 - Tag Day.  Meet at G-100 at 8:00am.  This is mandatory for rowers and we need as many parent drivers as possible.  As a driver you just follow the rowers (2) down the streets while they each take a side of the street and knock on doors asking for donations.  This is a huge fundraiser for us and with the cancellation of Gift Wrap and Ergathon, and probable increase charged by VASRA in rowers fees it is even more important that we have a good showing.  Please remember to wear your crew sweatshirts.

February 21 - tentative date for marina work day (rescheduled from Feb. 15)

February 27 - picture day, meet at Mount Vernon Post Office parking lot at 7:45 and remember to wear your crew sweatshirts/jackets.  Please be on time, we must enter as a group.

March 18 - Dinner Night out at Noodles and Company from 5:00-9:00pm (remember to buy a few Noodles and Company Gift Cards at Tuesday's meeting and come out and use them for a double fundraiser)

Also, check out our website www.mvcrew.com.  There is a lot of good information thanks to Cathy Lewis who keeps it updated for us.

Thanks and hope to see you Tuesday.
